The Golan Heights Winery Celebrates 40 Years of Excellence in Israeli Wine

Acclaimed worldwide, Golan Heights is a driving force behind quality viticulture, winemaking, and sustainability in the modern Israeli wine era. Golan Heights wines are exclusively imported by Yarden Inc. in the U.S.

NEW YORK JULY 12, 2023 - Golan Heights Winery, Israel’s leading producer of quality wines, is celebrating their 40th anniversary this year. Located in northern Galilee, the winery was established in 1983 by eight local cooperative communities and has made its mark on the Israeli wine world ever since. Exclusively imported by Yarden Inc. in the U.S., Golan Heights Winery produces three labels with a range of varieties and styles: Yarden, Gilgal, and Hermon.

Despite an ancient history, the modern era of Israeli winemaking is relatively recent. For the past 40 years Golan Heights Winery has led the way with a constant vision to develop expertise in every endeavor from viticulture and clonal selection to fine winemaking, sustainability and technology; efforts that have elevated Israeli wines to the highest levels of international recognition. Among numerous global awards over the years, Golan Heights Winery has attained “Best New World Winery” from Wine Enthusiast; Israel’s first “Top 100” listing in the annual Wine Spectator review; the “Best Winery Award” at VinItaly; and the Platinum Medal and 95 points at Decanter WWA. A driving force for quality standards, Golan Heights Winery created a Nursery & Propagation Block, partnering with world leaders ENTAV-INRA to supply clean virus-free plant material to the emerging Israeli wine industry. Most recently, Golan Heights was the first in Israel to adopt the LODI RULES from California, the global standard in sustainable certification.

All these achievements were unheard of 40 years ago and are cause for considerable pride today. Shares Assaf Ben Dov, CEO of the Golan Heights Winery: “To lead Israel’s quality wine culture is not a slogan for us; rather, it is our purpose and way of life for each one of us at the winery. It begins with the study of our terroir, continues through the creation of our wines, and underlines the special activities we undertake for consumers of high-quality wines and wine industry professionals.”

At the forefront of Golan Heights Winery is the shared desire to express terroir-driven wines. Head Winemaker Victor Schoenfeld joined the winery 30 years ago and has attained legendary status for his ability to harness the Golan Heights terroir through constant study, precision viticulture and technological innovation from vineyard to cellar. Schoenfeld and his team share a common passion for the Golan Heights region and collectively manage 1,557 acres planted with 20 grape varieties across 28 vineyards. The unique volcanic soils, extreme winter and summer climate, and varying elevations from 1,300 to almost 4,000 feet lend exceptional identity and range to the terroir. It has been the work of a lifetime for Schoenfeld: “Wine conveys a sense of place. It’s possible to sense a wine’s terroir in its flavor, aroma and color. Wine expresses a place’s culture, language, and people.”

Under Schoenfeld’s guidance, Golan Heights Winery has been fearless in their pursuit of introducing new varieties such as Syrah, Pinot Noir, Sangiovese, and Gewürztraminer as well as pioneering wine styles, which include Israel’s first icon wine, Yarden Katzrin, the first traditional method sparkling wines (including globally acclaimed Yarden Blanc de Blancs); Moscato made through cryoextraction; Port from original Portuguese varieties; and single vineyard wines that consistently rank among the most awarded from Israel. Technology and innovation are always at the forefront for Golan Heights, which ranks among the most studied and analyzed agricultural sites in Israel. The team practice precision agriculture across 450 vineyard blocks with the most sophisticated irrigation management and green practices such as composting and wind-generated electricity. Each vineyard block is mapped and catalogued, with constant monitoring of temperature, soil conductivity, growth and water.

As Schoenfeld is proud to note, Golan Heights Winery “acts as a model for others in the Israeli wine industry.” In 2012, Schoenfeld was a founding member of IPEVO, the Israeli Professional Enology & Viticulture Organization. Now registered as a government non-profit association, IPEVO sets shared Wine Standards for the industry and is highly valued by the local winemaking community.

Echolands Winery Appoints Dynamic New Winemaker Brian Rudin

Rudin to oversee winegrowing, hospitality and management operations for Walla Walla winery’s diverse estates and vineyard partners.

July 12, 2023 (Walla Walla, WA) — Echolands Winery has announced that Brian Rudin will be the new Winemaker and General Manager for its two estates in the Walla Walla Valley AVA. Co-owned by Doug Frost, Master of Wine and Master Sommelier, and Conservationist Brad Bergman, Echolands is the owner of Taggart Vineyard in the famed “North Slope,” part of SeVein Vineyards; and the forthcoming Mill Creek winemaking facility, a 341-acre site located in the high-elevation foothills of the Blue Mountains. Rudin, whose winemaking acumen builds on his past leadership roles with Duckhorn Wine Company and their Red Mountain label, Canvasback, will oversee winemaking operations, viticulture, team management and hospitality for Echolands. Rudin’s role succeeds that of Echolands’ former Winemaker, Taylor Oswald, who helped found and grow the winery from its inception in 2018.

“I was drawn to Echolands because of their innovative style and direction, the monumental influence of Doug Frost’s leadership and expertise, and the limitless potential of winegrowing within the Walla Walla Valley,” Rudin said. “There’s been a flourishing spirit of experimentation in the Walla Walla Valley: pushing the boundaries of elevations and varieties, showing inventiveness with wine styles, and exploring all the emerging subregions within this AVA. Echolands brings a fresh, holistic approach to their winemaking, and has been fearlessly rewriting the rules to create energetic and exciting wines.”

“Taylor [Oswald] has placed us on a great pathway, and we’re eternally grateful for everything he has done for us, especially for his wines,” said Doug Frost, MS MW, Co-Owner & Co-Founder of Echolands. “Brian is the perfect guy to lead us onward as we complete the new winery with its remarkable tasting room and a pretty damned ideal production area, all while building on the legacy of nuanced and, we’d like to think, elegant, long-lived wines."

Rudin brings more than 17 years of winemaking experience to his new role as Echolands’ Winemaker and General Manager. As a lifelong Washington native, Rudin’s career has grown alongside the boom of the state’s wine industry: He grew up in the eastern farm region of Wenatchee, graduated from Western Washington University and moved to Walla Walla in 2006, where he studied at the Institute of Enology & Viticulture, while pursuing the Court of Masters’ Certified Sommelier credential. Following his certification, Rudin worked as a production manager for Alder Ridge Vineyard and Zefina Winery and then as a winemaker for Cadaretta and Buried Cane Vineyards. Prior to his role at Echolands, he spent nine years as the winemaker for Duckhorn Wine Company, where he helped launch Duckhorn’s Red Mountain label, Canvasback.

Upcoming developments under Rudin’s new leadership include several new releases and the forthcoming opening of Echolands’ 27,000-square-foot winemaking and production facility in Mill Creek, which will feature a hospitality center and separate storage facility. Mill Creek will continue the sustainability initiatives for which Taggart was classed with the Sustainable WA designation, with Rudin’s keen focus on viticulture aiding biodiversity efforts in the vineyards. As Mill Creek’s new plantings come of age, Rudin and the Echolands team will balance the differences in terroir offered by Mill Creek, the SeVein Water Project and local growers.

To speak with Brian Rudin or for other press inquiries, please contact Claire Martin (claire@gregoryvine.com).

Echolands to Open New Mill Creek Winemaking Facility by Fall 2023

Led by Doug Frost, Master of Wine and Master Sommelier, and Conservationist Brad Bergman, Mill Creek is situated on 341 high-elevation acres with a dedicated production facility, hospitality center and barrel room under development in the foothills of the Blue Mountains

May 22, 2023 (Walla Walla, WA) — Echolands Winery of Walla Walla plans to open their new Mill Creek facility in time for fall 2023. The 341-acre site is located in the Mill Creek area of the Walla Walla Valley AVA in the foothills of the Blue Mountains, some of the highest elevations in Washington State. First announced in 2019, Mill Creek Road is the latest venture for co-owners Doug Frost, Master of Wine and Master Sommelier, and Conservationist Brad Bergman, who also own Taggart Vineyard in the SeVein Water Project. Mill Creek Road will house a dedicated winemaking, hospitality and barrel facility, and will assume all production for Echolands wines.

“From the outset, our new home in Mill Creek has impressed us as a special place to realize our vision for Echolands,” shares Doug Frost, CEO and Owner of Echolands Winery. “We’re surrounded by inspiring neighbors like Leonetti’s Mill-Creek-Uplands Vineyard, Aluvé, Walla Walla Vintners and aMaurice, who have paved the way to make incredible wines at the higher elevations in Walla Walla. Planting in this higher, cooler site will enable us to continue in the style we’ve established, with moderate alcohols and higher acids. Our new plantings, facilities and equipment will fall in line with our commitment to balance development with a living biome.”

“We knew Mill Creek was special from day one,” says Chairman Brad Bergman. “The southeast exposure of the property is perfectly situated with sweeping views of the Blue Mountains and rolling wheat fields. It reminds me of Tuscany meets the Sound of Music. I come from a long line of environmentally conscious nursery owners with a commitment to beautifying the planet and preserving earth’s unique places. Our goal is to draw on the differences in terroir between Mill Creek, the SeVein and local growers to develop a unique range of wines that reflect this spectacular place.”

The development of Mill Creek Road is led by Soderstrom Architects and Mountain States Construction Company. As of fall 2023, production facilities will debut with a 27,000-square-foot winemaking facility and barrel room equipped with closed-top stainless steel fermentation vessels of varying sizes, as well as open-top bins and smaller fermenters with an initial production capacity of 6,000 cases. All fruit will be hand-sorted upon arrival. The principal Mill Creek development area will also feature a spectacular hospitality center centered around a public tasting room, cantilevered over the winery grounds and outfitted with glass walls that offer a breathtaking view of the Blue Mountains. Additional plans include a separate 5,000-square-foot storage facility. The opening date of the hospitality center will be announced later this year.

The unique character of the Mill Creek area was a driving factor behind the Echolands site selection. Previously planted to grains and other crops, the Mill Creek property has been owned by the same family since the early 1900s. The site extends over 341 acres from 1,400 to 1,800 feet. The soils are principally silt-loam over basaltic bedrock with depths up to 12 feet. Echolands plans to develop the first 25 acres of vineyard along ideal hillside exposures with select Bordeaux varieties. Echolands also sources grapes from their own 50-acre Taggart Vineyard in the SeVein Water Project, supplemented by purchased grapes

from Les Collines Vineyard and other premier growers. As new plantings come of age, the Echolands team will balance the differences in terroir offered by Mill Creek, the SeVein Water Project and local growers.

The Mill Creek Road facility will adopt proven sustainability initiatives first practiced at the Echolands Taggart Vineyard. No more than half of Taggart’s total acreage was planted to preserve the remainder for biodiversity growth and a living biome, including owl boxes, beehives and native plants. Mill Creek’s natural assets include a high amount of rainfall that allows for dry farming without irrigation, a key element of responsible water management. Taggart was one of the first vineyards to receive the "Sustainable Washington" certification, a designation that Echolands will also strive for at Mill Creek Road.

The property is located at 3281 Mill Creek Road and is owned by Walla Squared LLC. Click here for the Mill Creek Road project fact sheet and click here for imagery. For inquiries, contact Claire Martin (claire@gregoryvine.com).

U.S. Remains Top Export Market For Languedoc Wines With 17% Growth By Value At Year-End 2022

Red and rosé sales of Languedoc wines post outstanding growth of 62% in value

Narbonne (Languedoc), FRANCE (May 11, 2023) – Following the release of 2022 year-end results, the Conseil Interprofessionnel des Vins du Languedoc (CIVL) has announced that the U.S. remains the number one export market for Languedoc wines. Total exports across all styles grew 17% by value as of year-end 2022, reflecting growing appreciation in the U.S. for quality wines from Languedoc. Consumer demand for Languedoc reds and rosés is particularly noteworthy: Combined, red and rosé styles increased 62% in value and 32% in import volume (2021 to 2022). Total exports surpassed 960,000 cases of wine sold across all styles, a metric that cements Languedoc as a region to watch in the U.S market.

“More than ever before, we’re finding that U.S. trade and consumers recognize the combination of savoir faire, adventure and quality that Languedoc delivers,” said Olivier Legrand, Director of CIVL. “With almost half of our appellations less than 20 years old, a new generation of vignerons is coming of age with very exciting wines and new ideas that are firmly rooted in our region’s commitment to sustainability. A third of our vineyard is organically certified, which also makes Languedoc exciting for wine lovers who value environmental responsibility.”

A year-end 2022 trade survey conducted by research provider Wine Opinions reveals what’s driving Languedoc’s strong presence in the U.S. market. The survey, which queried 369 U.S. qualified retailers, beverage directors and importers, identified the Languedoc region as a rising star led by an innovative generation of winemakers that value sustainable and organic wine production. Other key selling points highlighted by survey participants included interest in Languedoc’s wide variety of wines and styles and outstanding quality-to-value.

Survey results demonstrated high awareness of Languedoc, with 83% of respondents citing Languedoc as a leading wine region in the south of France. Other survey results also shed light on the growing appeal of Languedoc wines in the U.S. Respondents were asked to rank statements about the region, namely:

  1. A dynamic generation of Languedoc winemakers are driving quality and sustainability higher. 74% of respondents ranked this statement as a top qualifier of success for Languedoc. 33% of France’s certified organic vineyards are in Languedoc and Roussillon, the highest of any French wine area.

  2. Languedoc can produce GSM-style blends, fresh light whites and a variety of rosé wines at better value for the price than other regions. 77% of respondents responded positively to this statement, indicating that a wide variety of styles from the region’s 20 AOPs deliver noteworthy quality for their price.

  3. There has been tremendous improvement in Languedoc wines over the past decades in terms of style, quality and new appellations. 75% of respondents responded positively to this statement. 9 of the Languedoc region’s 20 AOPs are less than 20 years old, a quality standard that has been well-received by the trade.

Positive trends in Languedoc sales and awareness reflect the region’s continued dedication to promoting variety, quality, innovation and sustainability in its winemaking practices — cementing Languedoc as a forerunner in the U.S.’ new French wine scene. This strong regional awareness is supported by ongoing trade education, media outreach, and digital discovery campaigns led by the CIVL. Media and trade who are interested in receiving news and updates from Vins du Languedoc are invited to contact Claire Martin (claire@gregoryvine.com) or Katie Keith (katie@gregoryvine.com).

Established in 1994, CIVL acts as a central authority with oversight over the region’s grape-growing and winemaking business. The historic region of Languedoc encompasses 90,000 acres of vines and 22,000 winegrowers and négociants. Languedoc’s leading grape varieties in the red and rosé categories include Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Carignan and Cinsault, while predominant white grapes are Chardonnay, Piquepoul, Bourboulenc and Clairette. Red wines make up nearly 60% of all production in the region. How to Workshop Spanish Terroir

My first job in the wine industry was with Wines from Spain, a division of the Trade Commission of Spain in NYC. It was the late-90s and quality Spanish wines were becoming more widely available in the U.S. At the time the lead advocates for #SpanishWines were Chefs and restaurants: superstars like #AnthonyBourdain fell in love with the flavors of Spain, bringing back #Albariño, #Rioja and #Sherries in suitcases already loaded up with pimentón, olive oil and tinned fish. Americans learned about Spanish wine in the same context as regional foods, tapas, and creative expression.

For a country the size of Texas, the range and reach of Spanish wine culture is extraordinary. We’re ready for the next chapter in wine education with a spotlight on the pagos of Spain, the very special places that transcend denomination of origin. If you know the term cru, you already know what a pago is, namely, the Spanish term for a single vineyard designation reserved for exceptional viticultural sites. In 2000, while the U.S. was starting to lean into Spanish wines, a group of Castilian wineries dedicated to high-quality single estate production formed Grandes Pagos de Castilla (an organization that worked with the Spanish government to officially add Vinos de Pagos to national wine law by 2003). By 2004, the group was renamed Grandes Pagos de España (GPE) to accommodate member wineries throughout Spain. Today there are 36 GPE wineries; they have all earned their Grandes Pagos designation by meeting rigorous selection criteria for single estate winemaking, a process that takes years, and which can be revoked if winery standards fall short.

Grandes Pagos de España members share a common goal: to produce the highest quality wines that exemplify the origins of Spanish terroir. Over the past year, our Gregory + Vine team has had the privilege of working on The Terroir Workshop for Grandes Pagos de España. It has been an inspiring project and a humbling one: in the process of creating content for 36 wineries throughout Spain, we have been immersed in every aspect of #climate, #geography and #winery stories, and equally, have learned to be more expansive in our thinking. #GPE has realized a singular vision: to go beyond traditional wine study to present #terroir culture on a whole new level.

Despite all we have learned on the wine roads of Spain, we’re still in the early stages of this journey. In the words of Toni Sarrión, President of Grandes Pagos de España (and the owner of Mustiguillo winery in the province of Valencia), “we need a more holistic definition of terroir.” We’re more familiar today with Spanish geography, appellations and varieties, but what about the impact of culture, history and the people behind the wine? Pago wines are above all a human achievement, an intentional expression of place, of environmental responsibility and a labor of love that compel us to explore more.

It’s an exciting time for all of us who love Spain – thank you to my dear friend and colleague, Natasja Mallory for sharing so much knowledge and good times over the past 12 years. We invite everyone to learn more about the extraordinary people and places behind the terroir of Spain.

Brothers Georges and Daniel of DAOU Family Estates Release the 10th Anniversary Vintage of Soul of a Lion

Named in honor of Georges and Daniel Daou’s father, Joseph, Soul of a Lion has established DAOU Mountain in the Adelaida District of Paso Robles as a premier Cabernet Sauvignon estate

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE April 12, 2023 (Paso Robles, CA) – Brothers and co-proprietors Georges and Daniel Daou of DAOU Family Estates are proud to announce the 10th-anniversary release of their flagship Cabernet Sauvignon: 2020 Soul of a Lion. Since its debut in 2010, Soul of a Lion has received critical acclaim from wine critics and enthusiasts alike to establish DAOU Mountain in the Adelaida District of Paso Robles as one of the world’s leading estates for Cabernet Sauvignon. The April release date of Soul of a Lion coincides with the birthday and profound legacy of Joseph Daou, an inspiration for the Daou family.

“Soul of a Lion represents the journey that first brought our family to DAOU Mountain,” said Georges Daou, Co-Proprietor of DAOU Family Estates. “Our father endowed us with the passion, courage, and perseverance to pursue our dreams, qualities which we honor each year with this exceptional wine. We’re proud to celebrate our 10th anniversary of Soul of a Lion in the spirit of joy that has made this such a triumph for our family.”

“Our goal for Soul of a Lion has always been to realize the amazing potential of DAOU Mountain to craft the very best Cabernet Sauvignon,” said Winemaker and Proprietor Daniel Daou. “2020 Soul of a Lion captures the essence of the Adelaida District and is an exceptional tribute to our 10-year journey with this wine.” The 2020 vintage showcases the elegance and power that have made Soul of a Lion a benchmark for excellence. Daou crafts the wine from a meticulous parcel selection from DAOU Mountain, planted at an elevation of 2,200 feet on a 212-acre mountaintop, characterized by the ideal soils, microclimate, and elevation for Cabernet Sauvignon and Bordeaux varietals. With its deep ruby color and complex aromas of blackberry, cassis, and graphite, Soul of a Lion delivers a rich and balanced palate of dark fruit, velvety tannins, and a long, satisfying finish.

2020 ESTATE SOUL OF A LION

WINEMAKER TASTING NOTES (Cabernet Sauvignon 78%, Cabernet Franc 12%, Petit Verdot 10%): The 2020 vintage presents an alluring profusion of black cherry, mulberry, and Oregon blackberry aromas with notes of leather, cigar box, and dark chocolate. Hints of desert sage and crème de menthe accent the rich fruit. The palate is silky and voluptuous, delivering loads of currant, cassis, black raspberry, and ripe cherry. Notes of fig and baking spice are underscored by earthy tones of dates and truffle. Mature, ripe tannins yield a weighty, velvety texture integrated with a limestone minerality and subtle oak. A lengthy finish leaves lingering impressions of blackberry, plum, and espresso with a touch of white pepper. A wine of immense staying power that will evolve favorably for many years to come.” – Winemaker Daniel Daou

2020 VINTAGE NOTES (DAOU Mountain, Paso Robles AVA, Adelaida District): The 2020 growing season began on a dry note, followed by much-needed rains in April that replenished the soils and set the stage for healthy canopy growth. Conditions through mid-summer remained mild and steady, with the exception of a rare August thunderstorm. Subsequent heat waves and distant wildfires put DAOU Mountain to the test heading into harvest, yet despite the challenges, the 2020 vintage produced some of the most complex wines yet.

2020 Estate Soul of a Lion is available as of April 2023 at www.daouvineyards.com and through the DAOU+ app, with national distribution to phase in by June 2023. The suggested retail price is $150/per 750-ml bottle.

Grandes Pagos De España Launches Spanish Terroir Workshop Led By Top Educators In U.S. And Mexico

Immersive education program developed by Spain’s “Grands Crus” goes beyond traditional wine study to explore the full impact of history, science, geography, language and people

MADRID, MARCH 13, 2023 - Grandes Pagos de España (GPE), the leading Spanish association of 36 renowned single estate vineyards known as the “Grands Crus of Spain,” has launched The Terroir Workshop by Grandes Pagos de España, a global education program that goes beyond traditional wine study to present terroir culture on a whole new level. The program will debut in the U.S. and Mexico with comprehensive coursework designed for consumers and trade led by top Wine Ambassadors. Classroom study and tasting will focus on the foremost Spanish “pagos,” a single vineyard designation equivalent to the term “cru” reserved for exceptional viticultural sites. Membership in Grandes Pagos is based on a rigorous and independent selection process that values the importance of quality viticulture and winemaking together with the influence of people, history, culture, geography and climate.

Spain has one of the most dynamic and historic wine cultures in the world, which reflects many influences often overlooked by wine education that prioritizes varieties and geography. This can be to the detriment of a more holistic definition of terroir,” says Toni Sarrión, President of Grandes Pagos de España. “The term pago is at the heart of who we are as an organization and what we hope to communicate through our education program. Each of our wineries has a singular identity based on their unique geography, culture, history and perhaps most significantly, the people behind the wines today. Working with top educators worldwide, we will explore the profound complexity of Spanish wine from a perspective that places the highest value on terroir and human achievement.”

The Terroir Workshop by Grandes Pagos de España will launch in Miami, Los Angeles and Mexico as of August 2023, with additional locations worldwide to be announced. Classes will be led by notable Spanish wine experts, including: Alessandra Esteves, Founder of Florida Wine Academy in Miami; Monica Marin DipWSET in Los Angeles; and Sandra Fernández Gaytán, of SFG Estrategias in Mexico. Each educator will cover eight regions of Spain (Green Spain, Meseta North, Ebro River Valley, Catalonia, Mediterranean, Meseta Central, South and the Islands) with instruction to encompass the impact of history, culture, geography, climate and people on terroir.

Each GPE Wine Ambassador will share a common syllabus and will determine the length of the coursework over one or two days, estimated at eight to ten hours of guided education and tasting. Students will receive a pre-read digital study guide. Additionally, students will receive comprehensive profiles of GPE wineries to guide their immersion into Spanish pago and terroir culture. Classes will be held in person and will include a combination of dynamic presentations and testing to reinforce learning. Tasting will be a critical component, and as part of the exclusive curriculum, students will taste a wide selection of pagos from GPE member wineries. Students who successfully finish the course will receive a certificate of completion. For more information about upcoming classes, and to be notified of new course locations, please contact info@grandespagos.com to learn more about Grandes Pagos de España and The Terroir Workshop click here, or contact Emily Hardin-Lombardi (emily@gregoryvine.com) or Claire Martin (claire@gregoryvine.com)

About Grandes Pagos de España

Founded in 2000, Grandes Pagos de España is a non-profit association of thirty-six prestigious wineries across Spain. Membership in Grandes Pagos is based on rigorous selection criteria for viticulture and winemaking excellence on the level of a pago, a delineated vineyard that is the ultimate terroir designation in Spain. Grandes Pagos de España aims to defend the unique, terroir-driven personality of single-estate wines, to uphold and promote the ethos of Spanish winemaking, and to produce wines of excellence in harmony with the soil, nature and climate of each vineyard. The organization has just launched The Terroir Workshop by Grandes Pagos de España (currently available in the U.S. and Mexico) to explore Spanish terroir in the context of history, science, geography, language and people.

The Spearhead Group Announces Bottle2Bag™ Sustainable Packaging Program

Food, spirits, and beverage clients can reduce environmental impact and realize new savings.

The Spearhead Group, a global packaging company focused on sustainability, is launching Bottle2Bag™, a luxury textile bag solution made from recycled plastic bottles. Through an innovative production process, Bottle2Bag converts used plastic bottles (rPET) into luxury textiles to make premium product bags for clients.

“The addition of Bottle2Bag to our offerings dramatically increases the sustainable textile packaging options available for brands,” says Heather Fritzsche, CEO and Co-founder of The Spearhead Group. “Spirits, food, and beverage brands rely on custom textile bags to create strong packaging statements that reinforce brand identity. Bottle2Bag is a win-win for high-volume clients seeking to sustainably secure their long-term packaging needs at the most affordable prices. We are so proud to deliver on our promise to Spearhead’s core values of ‘Sustainability and Diversity’ with this new offering.”

The Spearhead Group has managed a vertically integrated textile bag assembly production facility for many years. The latest addition of rPET fabrication allows Spearhead to offer one of the largest and most affordable sustainable textile options on the market today. Bottle2Bag is unique in the industry because the fabrics are directly woven onsite from rPET without the need for a separate fabric supplier, greatly increasing the traceability and uniformity of the end product. Bottle2Bag enables heightened quality control, texture, and color consistency, delivering a breakthrough solution for clients to work with recycled materials. The Spearhead Group is currently working with various spirits clients to implement Bottle2Bag solutions that maximize sustainability and brand impact.

Spearhead predicts that switching to this rPET material for a year could save about 1,700 tons of CO2 emissions and 60 million water bottles from going into the landfill (about 30,000 cubic yards of saved landfill), and up to 16,300 barrels of oil overall.

Giesen Group Introduces Giesen 0% Riesling to World's Leading Premium Non-Alcoholic Range

Giesen 0% range extension follows strong U.S. consumer demand for New Zealand 0% Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio, Premium Red and Rosé

BLENHEIM, NEW ZEALAND, NOVEMBER 01, 2022 - Giesen 0% of New Zealand, the global premium brand leader in alcohol-removed wines, has announced the release of Giesen 0% New Zealand Riesling, the newest addition to their popular non-alcoholic range. Giesen 0% Riesling offers mindful wine drinkers a lower-calorie, non-alcoholic option with less than 0.5% alcohol per volume, no added sugars, and 33 calories per 5 Oz standard serving (as compared to Giesen 10.5% Riesling). Giesen Group’s extension to their premium non-alcoholic range follows the successful launch of the world’s first alcohol-removed New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc in 2020, and the introduction of Giesen 0% Pinot Grigio, Premium Red and Rosé in spring 2022.

Giesen 0% is a benchmark for quality in the rising non-alcoholic beverage sector and was just named a 2022 Impact Hot Prospect Brand in recognition of notable sales growth in the U.S. The strong sales performance highlights the emergence of the ‘sober curious’ movement driven by consumers seeking quality alcohol-removed wines to match healthy lifestyle preferences.

“Giesen 0% Riesling is a response to overwhelming customer feedback to add this popular, food-friendly varietal to our core range”, says Duncan Shouler, Giesen Group Chief Winemaker. “Our new Riesling is my personal favorite from the Giesen non-alcoholic range. The fruit is sourced from Marlborough and Waipara, with Marlborough’s signature bright, citrus flavor and Waipara florals at the forefront. Riesling is such an expressive variety, and we’re able to preserve its vibrant aromatic character through our gentle alcohol removal process.”

The new Giesen 0% New Zealand Riesling features notes of lime, citrus blossom, and elderflower on the nose. The palate offers lively and refreshing Riesling character with zingy lime, ripe mandarin, and delicious sweetness, all balanced by crisp acidity to appeal to wine lovers and sommeliers seeking food-friendly pairings.

Shouler believes Giesen 0% Riesling is the closest version to its full-strength counterpart, Giesen New Zealand Riesling. The process for making Giesen 0% alcohol-removed wines begins with a full-strength Giesen wine as a base. This ensures that the final wine has the aroma and flavors expected of the full-strength equivalent. Then, through advanced spinning cone technology – which allows for gentle alcohol extraction through low-temperature, vacuum steam distillation – the aroma is first removed from the wine, followed by the alcohol. The Giesen team then blends the alcohol-removed wine, aroma essence, and a touch of grape juice to round it out.

Available as of November 2022, the suggested retail price for Giesen 0% New Zealand Riesling is $15.99. Giesen 0% wines are exclusively imported by Pacific Highway Wines & Spirits, the 2022 winner of “Importer of the Year” by Wine Enthusiast’s Wine Star Awards. Giesen 0% Riesling is recommended as an aperitif and offers a classic varietal structure to pair with complex dishes. Bartenders have also developed a range of non-alcoholic cocktails, such as the Riesling 0% Mojito, as a lively alternative to full-strength drinks.

For more information about Giesen 0%, including samples and interview requests with Chief Winemaker Duncan Shouler, please contact Katherine Dolecki, Elodi Bodamer, or Helen Gregory at Gregory + Vine.

About Spinning Cone

Giesen Group is a pioneer in the non-alcohol wine category, having introduced the world's first alcohol-removed New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc – Giesen 0% – in early 2020. Today, Giesen Group is leading the category investment as the first New Zealand winery to own a spinning cone unit, allowing for winemaking innovation, varietal trials and ultimate quality control. Representing an investment of over $2 million, the Giesen Group spinning cone machine gently distills wine into three layers: aroma, alcohol and body. Leaving the alcohol aside, the distinctive aroma is combined with the body of the wine to create 0% alcohol wine with as many recognizable varietal characteristics as possible. All Giesen 0% wines contain no more than 0.5% alcohol/volume, the level required for non-alcoholic beverages (comparable to the amount of alcohol that naturally occurs in fruit juice).

The Albariño Wines Of Rías Baixas Headline Season Four Of America’S #1 Wine Show, “V Is For Vino”

D.O. RIAS BAIXAS, SPAIN (PRWEB) JUNE 28, 2022 - Directed and hosted by Anter on location in Rias Baixas, viewers will take a journey to discover the people, history and culture behind the food and wines of this coastal Atlantic region. Along the way, Anter visits several wineries dedicated to the world-famous Albariño grape, including: Martín Códax, Fillaboa, Granbazán and Valmiñor. Each winery has a unique story to tell, spanning many generations of family growers, all with a shared passion for Albariño.

Known for elegant white wines that compete with the world’s best, Rías Baixas (pronounced REE-ahs BI-shas) occupies a cool, green corridor of northwest Spain on the Atlantic coast. Albarino thrives here, creating a popular wine style that is crisp, light, and refreshing with hints of sea spray, minerality and well-balanced acidity. The episode also highlights Galicia’s lively food scene and the versatility of Albariño with many types of cuisine, including local seafood dishes and classic tapas like olives, Marcona almonds and Jamón Serrano.

A true destination for travelers to Spain, Rías Baixas is the country’s leading white wine region with the US as its top global export market. For a taste of Rías Baixas at home, V is for Vino is a true gateway to the region with original footage, and fun topics that will appeal to wine lovers or seasoned sommeliers.

"I couldn't believe the diversity of the region," says Vince, host and producer of the show. "I went in thinking Albariño was a straightforward wine but left with the knowledge that Albariño from Rías Baixas is truly one of the most versatile wines out there. I had lean, crisp, salient styles but also rich lees-aged styles. I had young vibrant wines, but also oak-aged wines that aged wonderfully! And I had lean citrus-driven wines from cooler climates to tropical-flavored wines from the warmer areas. If you combine that with the absurd amount of fresh seafood in the region and the lush green Celtic landscapes, you end up with one of the most picturesque, and truly unique episodes we've ever done."

The Albarino from Rías Baixas episode “V is for Vino” season 4 launches on July 1 on YouTube at V is for Vino Wine Show. The featured wines are available for purchase to enliven your tasting journey to the region. Want to learn more about the Albariño wines of Rías Baixas? Visit Rías Baixas Wines and say “Salud” to summer!

In Rías Baixas’ unique climate, Albariño shares the same mineral-rich soils and cool climate as the world’s leading white wine regions, including Loire Valley, New Zealand and the Rhine. G+V Named U.S. Agency for Bordeaux Region

bordeaux page to logo.jpg

The Conseil Interprofessionnel du Vin de Bordeaux (CIVB) has announced Gregory + Vine as the public relations and education agency of record for the region beginning this year and continuing through 2022. Gregory + Vine will support public relations and education campaigns for the CIVB – the governing body that represents the region’s winemakers, merchants, and brokers – as well as The Bordeaux Wine School. The partnership will encompass a dynamic messaging campaign focused on the approachability and broad range of Bordeaux wines today, including the region’s significant commitment to sustainability, women in winemaking and next generation winemakers.

“We are thrilled to represent France’s premier winemaking region in the US,” says Helen Gregory, Founder and President of Gregory + Vine. “Our campaign is about the people, winemakers and négociants/wine merchants behind today’s Bordeaux. We are excited to share their stories and support increased awareness of the region’s incredible range of wine.”

Media who are interested in receiving news and updates from the CIVB and The Bordeaux Wine School are invited to contact Helen Gregory (helen@gregoryvine.com), Trish Heywood (trish@gregoryvine.com) or Emma Mrkonic (emma@gregoryvine.com).

Bordeaux Wine Council (C.I.V.B.) was created by the French Law dated August 18, 1948. It unites representatives from the three families in the Bordeaux wine industry: winegrowers, merchants and traders. The CIVB’s 4 missions:

  • Marketing mission: position Bordeaux wines as the brand of reference, create a strong bond between consumers and the Bordeaux brand, recruit new, younger consumers and ensure their loyalty.

  • Technical mission: build knowledge, protect the quality of Bordeaux wines and anticipate new requirements related to environmental and food safety regulations.

  • Economic mission: provide intelligence on production, the market, the environment and sale of Bordeaux wines around the world.

  • The industry’s general interests: protect the terroirs, fight counterfeiting, develop wine tourism.

Stop Blaming Millennials

It’s time to stop blaming millennials for a lack of interest in overpriced and overhyped wine. Since the 1970s, vintners and landowners have steadily inflated bottle prices: cult brands like Screaming Eagle and Colgin command an incomprehensible $1,000 per bottle. The problem is, Millennials don’t buy it (and can’t buy it, more on that below)

The Proper Way to Pour Cider

Asturias, Spain

Asturias, Spain

Discovering Cider Traditions in Asturias, Spain

Recently, Gregory+Vine Director Natasja found herself with the unexpected opportunity to explore Asturias, Spain and the coastal city of Gijon. While visiting, Natasja was struck by the incredible cider culture of the region.

The provinces of Asturias, Galicia, Cantabria, and Basque Country sit on the northwest coast of Spain - nicknamed “Green Spain” - and are marked by lush landscapes that cascade into the Cantabric Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. Asturias is just east of Galicia and has a similar climate, but much more of a mountainous geography.

Where Asturians set themselves apart is through their love for cider, which is the drink of choice and goes hand-in-hand with the region’s social and culinary traditions. There are three types of cider produced in Asturias: “sidra natural” (traditional), filtered, and sparkling. The most popular - sidra natural - is dry, has crisp acidity and usually around 6% alcohol. It is bottled unfiltered, and must be aerated as it is served to coax out all of its expressiveness - a process called “escanciado.”

You would never grasp the proper cider-pouring technique from just a photo. Below is a video that shows just how it’s done at Sidreria El Furacu in Villaviciosa.

Your aim better be good as this is when the (messy!) fun begins. A thin rivulet of cider is poured from high overhead and caught in an angled glass below. The designated drinker is meant to quickly down the frothy sip, dumping any remaining drops and sediment into buckets on the floor.

Taverns and restaurants in Asturias are set up for this cider-pouring ritual, making for a very interactive, social experience. Alternatively, some fine restaurants in Asturias offer tableside cider dispensers that aerate and dispense cider at the touch of a button, like the one at MamáGuaja restaurant in Gijón, Spain.

ciderdispenser.jpg

Today, most cider is produced with the Denominacion de Origen Protegida Sidra de Asturias seal, which denotes quality, character, and inclusion of 76 approved apple varieties. According to Turismo Asturias, over 40 million bottles of cider are produced annually, most of which is consumed within Spain. When traveling to Asturian cities such as Gijón, Villaviciosa, Nava and Siero, cider is omnipresent: you can find it in restaurants, cider taverns (“sidrerias”), and cider mills (“lagares”), where typical gastronomic parties known as espichas are commonly held.

If you are curious about Asturian cider, visit sidradeesturias.es to learn more.

Natasja is a Director at Gregory+Vine and splits her time between Madrid, New York, and Kansas City. A judge for the European Tasters Guild, Natasja is fluent in Spanish, French, and Italian and heads up agency mentorship and key accounts in Europe and South America.

Helen Gregory, a founding partner of Gregory + Vine, a New York and KC-based branding and strategic communications agency that specializes in global wine, food, spirits and lifestyle has visited with top makers and bars around the world. She made the move to Kansas City in 2014 and what she’s seeing has her excited not only for what’s happening, but also what’s to come.

“The spirits scene is really pushing the boundaries,” she says. “There’s so much here to feel good about.”

Gregory divides her time between offices in Kansas City, New York and Europe. Yet as she continues to watch Kansas City’s cocktail scene evolve, she’s noticed that local establishments and products are on par with the best anywhere.

“We’re very privileged to live in a city where bar talent, Chefs and hospitality have come together,” she says. “This isn’t true in a lot of places. We live in a very creative city with access to high-end ingredients, and as a result, people take chances. It’s a great time to be here.”

Why not tap into that creativity and talent as you’re planning holiday gifts? Whether you’re buying for a spirits novice or a cocktail connoisseur, Kansas City has no shortage of expertly made and thoughtfully curated products that will delight the lucky recipient. If you’re in need of a shot of gifting inspiration (no pun intended!), Gregory has several recommendations to help guide your shopping.

Create lasting memories with an experience

“When you think about a gift, it doesn’t have to be a thing,” Gregory says. “Cocktails are best shared and people crave new experiences, especially in spirits where so many of us are still learning. In Kansas City, you can have a different cocktail experience every night.”

Gregory recommends gathering a group of friends for an introduction to Kansas City’s drinks scene. Some of her top spots include The Monarch Bar, where she recommends trying something new from the award-winning menu—“the cocktail list is extremely diverse, from classics to the wildly creative and fun” she says. Gregory loves the timeless yet experimental vibe of Manifesto, and The Hey! Hey! Club, a newcomer to the scene located in the new J. Rieger & Co. distillery. “The Hey! Hey! offers a first-class cocktail experience that celebrates the best of KC tradition and today,” she notes. “It would stand out as a great bar anywhere, and just happens to be in a working distillery.”

All About Bottled-in-Bond

Celebrating the Anniversary of Repeal Day

Happy Repeal Day!

December 5th officially marks the anniversary of Prohibition Repeal Day -  the day the sale and consumption of alcohol once again became legal with the end of Prohibition. To mark the occasion, we’re looking at a historic labelling term that is staging a modern comeback: Bottled-in-Bond.

Bottled-in-Bond is an increasingly popular designation that whiskey drinkers are likely to see more than ever. If you’re wondering what it means, Bottled-in-Bond is a legal classification reserved for products made in one distillation season (January–June or July–December). They must be aged a minimum of four years and bottled at 100 proof (50% ABV). The label must also include the distillery where the spirit was made and bottled.

The term dates back to the Bottled-in-Bond Act of 1897, a federal statute that addressed the widespread practice of adulteration (with decidedly non-whiskey ingredients like iodine, tobacco, turpentine, and ammonia). During the Prohibition era, the contents of spirits became even less controlled, as opportunists recklessly cut their spirits with the cheapest (and sometimes toxic) ingredients.

Bottled-in-Bond Labels

A legal labeling classification for whisky that indicates quality. Released this year, Remus Volstead Reserve Straight Bourbon Whiskey is bottled-in-bond from 2005, 14-year aged Bourbons. The name commemorates the 100th year anniversary of the start of Prohibition under the Volstead Act.

Luckily, since the repeal of the Volstead Act on December 5, 1933, the American whiskey industry has cleaned up its act. Today, the resurgence of the Bottled-in-Bond term is an indication of how far quality whiskey-making has come, often with a nod to its historical origins. Next time you’re looking for an extra special whiskey or Bourbon that commemorates the Prohibition era, look for Bottled-in-Bond on the label.
